She was not born to the Covenant of Ash but she died inside it, which is the only membership that faith counts. For three winters she sat with the dying in the hospice and took their last debts off their hands, and the keepers came to call her Mother without irony. When her own turn came she did not send for a healer. Deacon stayed at the door and let her go the way she had let so many others. The Tabernacle rang the bell once, which is what they ring for their own.
